GOAL

Valley Northern is committed to minimizing waste throughout all aspects of our operations by implementing sustainable practices, optimizing resource usage, and reducing our environmental impact. Our goal is to systematically identify sources of waste, from excess materials to inefficient processes, and address these through targeted initiatives that support the environment while enhancing operational efficiency.

WASTE PALLET REDUCTION

In 2023, Valley Northern launched a comprehensive campaign aimed at reducing waste across operations. Recognizing opportunities to minimize environmental impact, we focused on identifying and addressing areas of excess waste

Waste Pallet Initiative

One significant area of focus was waste from damaged wooden pallets. Our operations team observed that used and damaged pallets were accumulating and presented both a disposal challenge and a waste of resources. In response, a dedicated team member was appointed to explore and implement a sustainable solution.

Actions Taken

  • Recycling and Repurposing – Damaged pallets were sent for recycling or repurposed as woodchips, which are now used as biofuel. This not only reduced landfill waste but also contributed to renewable energy resources.

 

Environmental Impact

  • By recycling the wooden pallets and converting them into biofuel, we effectively reduced landfill contributions and supported a circular economy.

This initiative underscores Valley Northern’s commitment to sustainable practices and resource efficiency in waste management, laying the groundwork for future waste reduction efforts.

PAPERLESS BILLING CAMPAIGN

In 2023, Valley Northern launched a Paperless Billing Campaign as part of our commitment to reducing paper waste and promoting digital solutions. This initiative aimed to transition all customers from paper-based billing to electronic billing

Campaign Overview

The campaign focused on raising awareness about the environmental benefits of going paperless and encouraging customers to make the switch. By providing clear instructions and support, we facilitated a smooth transition to digital billing.

Actions Taken

  • Customer Outreach – Educated customers on the advantages of paperless billing and provided resources to simplify the transition.

  • Digital Infrastructure Strengthened digital billing capabilities to ensure reliable, accessible service for all customers.

 

Environmental Impact

  • Paper Savings – The shift to paperless billing resulted in a reduction of over 285 kg of paper throughout the year, cutting down on both resource usage and waste generation.

This campaign highlights Valley Northern’s proactive approach to reducing paper waste, conserving resources, and promoting a more sustainable, digital-first customer experience.
